Dominique Vervoort

President and Founder

Dominique Vervoort is a Belgian doctor (KU Leuven ’18) and current MPH/MBA dual degree student at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and the Johns Hopkins Carey Business School. Previously, Dominique completed the Paul Farmer Global Surgery Fellowship at the Program in Global Surgery and Social Change at Harvard Medical School. Dominique has introduced the concept of global cardiac surgery to literature and advocates for the nearly six billion people worldwide without access to cardiac surgical care. Clinically, as an aspiring cardiac surgeon, his interests lie in aortic and congenital heart surgery outcomes and disparities in accessing cardiac care.

Danielle O’Hara

My name is Danielle and I’m a Cardiothoracic Surgery resident at the University of North Carolina. Passionate about serving those with the greatest need, I’m thrilled to combine my love of cardiac surgery, interest in global health, and experience in research to serve the mission of the Global Cardiac Surgical Initiative. In my free time, you’re likely to find me soaking up the North Carolina sunshine while catching up with friends, listening to live music, or walking my adorable pup, Athena.

Alejandro Pizano

Research Team

Dr. Alejandro Pizano is the research coordinator of the Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery Department from The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston. He has five years of clinical and research experience in cardiovascular surgery. His research interest encompasses minimally invasive cardiovascular surgery, mitral valve surgery, aortic surgery, biomedical devices, endovascular surgery, education, and digital health. He holds a medical doctor and biomedical engineering master’s degree from the University of Los Andes, Colombia. His practice philosophy focuses on the patient’s quality of life, access to healthcare, and integrating clinical care with research, education, and biomedical engineering. Also, he is a Showjumping rider.

I’m a final year medical student at the State University / Faculté de Médecine et de Pharmacie. since 2017, I’m the director of social affairs of Centre de Recherche et du Bien-Etre Collectif which mainly work in the palmes region and the project manager of SDGs for Haiti. I am an active member of Association Haitienne des Etudiants en Médecine (AHEM-IFMSA). Founding member and head of advocacy of InciSioN-Haiti, I am an aspiring cardiac surgeon and part of the Global Cardiac Surgery Initiative 20-21 team.

I was born and raised in Tegucigalpa, Honduras and I am currently a 7th year medical student at Tecnologico de Monterrey, School of Medicine and Health Sciences in Monterrey, Mexico. My goal is to become a cardiothoracic surgeon and to give back to all the countries who have welcomed me whole-heartedly. My interests include global surgery, health-care equity, research, and education. I love cross-stitching, singing, and spending time with my family.
